"Sos Merdules" , ossia gli uomini, i contadini , sono vestiti con mastruche (pelli bianche o nere) o con vecchi abiti della tradizione locale, hanno il viso coperto da maschere lignee , dai tratti spesso deformati, forse per raffigurare la fatica del lavoro e della vita nei campi.

Procedono lentamente, ricurvi, portando sulle spalle "sa taschedda" , una sorta di zaino in pelle atto a contenere pane e companatico. Tengono con una mano le redini ("sas soccas") cui sono legati i Boes, uno o più di uno, e con l'altra mano si appoggiano ad una sorta di bastone che usano anche per tenere a bada i Boes. Parlano , si lamentano della loro sorte ed esortano spesso gli astanti a tenersi lontani dal pericolo: "appartadeboche po su voe" (allontanatevi perché stanno passando i buoi e può essere pericoloso).

Talvolta il Merdùle è un uomo travestito da donna e rappresenta la difficoltà di una vedova nell'affrontare il lavoro dei campi, talaltra si può presentare con "sas soccas armugoddu" (le redini a tracolla), ready to snare, "issoccare" , the Boes that pass nearby. "Sas Mascaras Serias" ( uomini e donne di tutte le età e condizioni ) procedono saltellanti e con movenze di danza, vestite in modo eccentrico , con abiti vecchi, lenzuola, copriletti e persino tappeti da tavolo; rappresentano lo spirito goliardico che capovolge il senso dell'esistenza; oggi indossano costumi preparati per l'occasione.

Il carnevale , che con le sue maschere per tre giorni impazza per le vie del paese, dalla domenica di quinquagesima fino al martedì che precede il mercoledì delle Ceneri, inizia in realtà la sera del 16 gennaio, festa di Sant'Antonio Abate, quando, dopo la funzione religiosa che termina con la benedizione del falò ("su Ogulone") in piazza, le maschere fanno la loro prima uscita e si radunano intorno al fuoco.
