Carnival Mamoiada is one of the most famous events of Sardinian folklore.
this traditional carnival masks are " mamuthones" and "Issohadores" , which make their appearance on the Feast of St. Anthony between 16 and 17 January, then Sunday Carnival and the Tuesday fat.
The origins of carnival Mamoiada also known as "the dance of mamuthones" are dark, there are many assumptions that were made, not actually certified. According to some , the ritual dates back to nuragica , born as an act of worship of animals, to protect against evil spirits or to propitiate the harvest.
I "mamuthones" and "Issohadores" are typical carnival masks Mamoiada in Sardinia. They are two different figures
for clothing and movements, but representation in doing the same role . The entire community is involved in the preparation of forms, given the importance of the event and risultato.

il volto è coperto dalla maschera lignea nera ( "sa visera" ), fissata con cinghiette di cuoio, il capo è avvolto in un fazzoletto femminile, mentre il corpo è rivestito di pelle di pecora nera o bianca ( "sa mastruca" ).
Sulle spalle il mamuthone porta una gran quantità di campanacci sistemati in modo particolare ( "sa garriga" ).
Vari sono i legni impiegati oggi (anticamente si usava il pero selvatico) per intagliare le maschere che poi vengono annerite: fico, ontano, olmo, castagno, noce. |
Lo "Issohadore" :
è una maschera complementare a quella del "mamuthone".
Il suo abbigliamento ( "veste'e turcu" - vestito da turco - per gli anziani di Mamoiada) attualmente prevede: la "berritta" sarda nera legata al mento con un fazzoletto variamente colorato, i larghi pantaloni e la camicia di tela bianchi , le sopraccalze di lana nera e il corpetto rosso del costume tradizionale maschile; a tracolla porta una cinghia in pelle e stoffa corredata di piccoli sonagli ; legato alla vita, con un lembo sciolto lungo la gamba sinistra, uno scialle , o ampio fazzoletto con bellissimi ricami colorati. |  |
 | Ultimamente è stato ripristinato l'uso della "visera crara" , una maschera chiara dai lineamenti fini, da alcuni indicata come "maschera de Santu" (o "de Santa) e da altri come "maschera limpia " (clean or simply beautiful). |
Carnival Mamoiada
A Mamoiada they say that" there is no mamuthones and Issohadores carnival ": their performance is' most important event, the symbol of Carnival, and at the same time wish for happiness and good times.
This "procession danced" (as described by the ethnologist R. Composition of the parade
Il gruppo della sfilata, composto tradizionalmente da 12/14 mamuthones e 8/10 issohadores, avanza in modo assolutamente preordinato:
 | i mamuthones , rigorosamente disposti su due file parallele, incedono lentamente , cadenzando il passo con forti colpi di campanacci, mentre gli issohadores , disposti come per proteggere il gruppo in avanguardia, retroguardia e all'esterno delle file, si muovono rapidissimi in ogni direzione, throwing the rope ("soha") to the audience to catch new prey.
The two figures , is characterized by different clothing by way of moving, they played together .

movements
The step of mamuthones is obviously different from that of Issohadores, but not discordant.
The slow pace and cadence of the first movement is somewhat forced, due to the weight of the equipment and the need to ring all the bells.
Every step of the slow Mamuthone , clocked by the sound of bells on the back, shaken with some sort of hopping and rotation of the shoulders (once right and once on the left) is performed in synchrony perfertta with the rest of the group, so as to produce a single massive roar in unison. The repetition of
cadence is interrupted after a number of steps to a series of three small jumps and their clash of "Garrigas" .
 | The ssohadores the contrary, move with steps agile, light and fast , while maintaining the position in the parade and throw occasionally "sa soha " ( tourniquet ) outside the group to capture the chosen one among the crowd, which was carefully drawn to the parade. The
dell'issohadore skill lies in being able to capture the "prey" con questa originale fune di giunco intrecciato. "Sa soha" , infatti, essendo molto più leggera , è molto più difficilmente governabile delle tradizionali funi di pelle o canapo e rende molto più impegnativi il lancio e il centro dell'obiettivo; perciò solitamente viene bagnata prima della sfilata. |
Durante questi movimenti gli issohadores possono scambiare
qualche parola con la gente che li circonda, mentre i
mamuthones restano
muti per tutto il percorso della processione.
